We will visit the Auckland Museum which gives an excellent introduction to the artistic legacy and cultures of the peoples of the Pacific; the monumental carvings, buildings, canoes and taonga (treasures) of the Maori; and the diversity of cultures which now combine to form the rich tapestry of race, nationality and creed which is modern New Zealand.

This evening is at leisure to sample Auckland’s excellent restaurants, cafés and bars. Our escort will let everyone know their plans and anyone is welcome to join them.

After breakfast we will depart Auckland to travel north over the Auckland Harbour Bridge to first visit the Parry Kauri Park. Here we will view some fine examples of Giant Kauri Trees.

Continuing on we visit the Matakohe Kauri Museum, at Otamatea. Here we gain an insight to the early New Zealand pioneer history, which helped form the New Zealand that we see today.

We then travel north through the Waipoua Forest surrounded by giant Kauri Trees and along the shores of the Hokianga Harbour to Paihia in the beautiful Bay of Islands.

Upon arrival we will check into our hotel and have time to freshen up before we meet for dinner.

This afternoon is at your leisure – perhaps take a cruise (additional cost) through game fishing waters to the Cape Brett Lighthouse, visiting Motukokako Island, majestic Grand Cathedral Cave and passing through the famous ‘Hole in the Rock’ (conditions permitting). This cruise is a wonderful opportunity to see some of the beautiful islands which give this area its name. Dolphins frolicking around the boat are a common sight. Auckland – Waitomo – Rotorua  (B,D)

This morning after breakfast we will depart Auckland and travel south, crossing the Bombay Hills through the dairy rich Waikato countryside to arrive at the famous Waitomo Caves.

Continue to walk down to an underground stream to board a small boat to view the glow-worm grotto – an underground cavern featuring millions of glow-worms.

From Waitomo we make our way to the thermal wonderland of Rotorua, the Sulphur City. Rotorua has the most energetic thermal activity in the country with bubbling mud pools, gushing geysers, beautiful coloured hot springs and terrace formations created by mineral water. Rotorua also has a large Maori population whose cultural activities are interesting and accessible as will be witnessed tomorrow evening.

We check in to our hotel and then meet tonight for dinner.

Experience the warmth of the Maori people during an evening of ceremonial rituals, powerful cultural performance, storytelling & hangi feasting. Enter the pre-European Maori village, witness the earth being scraped carefully away from the hangi pit and enter their ancestral Meeting House to relax as their family entertain you with a powerful cultural performance before dining on the traditional hangi buffet dinner (Maori feast) cooked the traditional Maori way in an earth oven.

Day 8

Rotorua – Napier  (B,L)

This morning after breakfast we visit Te PuiaThe New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute and Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley featuring the famous Pohutu Geyser.

Departing Rotorua, we travel via New Zealand’s largest pine tree forests to Taupo. En-route we make a stop at the Wairakei Geothermal Steam Field. This was a world-first, generating electricity by tapping a natural steam field then channelling the steam to a nearby power generation plant.

Our next stop is to view the mighty Huka Falls. Huka in Maori translates to “snow”, as the water here has the appearance of snow falling as it is forced along from Lake Taupo through the falls on its journey along the Waikato River.

This afternoon we travel around the shores of Lake Taupo, which is New Zealand’s largest lake and a world renowned trout fishery.

Continuing on, we cross the Rangitaiki Plains to Hawke’s Bay, and the seaside city of Napier. Napier was devastated by an earthquake in 1931 and was rebuilt during the period when Art Deco Architecture was fashionable. The area is also one of New Zealand’s top grape growing regions with some of the country’s best-known wines coming from the Hawke’s Bay.

This evening is at leisure. We can enjoy the exceptional dining options at nearby restaurants or choose to dine at the hotel.
